This past November marked an unforgettable chapter for four students of SNA Marianapolis International School – Mai An, Dang Tuong Gia Huy, Giang Quoc Binh, and Le Quoc Viet. Their journey to Yale University for the Tournament of Champions of the prestigious World Scholar’s Cup was a testament not only to their academic prowess but also to their capacity to glean invaluable lessons and create cherished memories among a global community of scholars. Though united by the shared experience of this extraordinary trip, each student walked away with unique impressions and reflections. What did the World Scholar’s Cup mean to them? Let’s uncover their perspectives.
Every Journey is a Pathway to Knowledge
For Mai An, participating in the Scholar’s Cup had been a long-standing aspiration. “I had been enamored with the competition even before traveling to the U.S. for the finals,” she enthusiastically shared. Among the various activities, the Scavenger Hunt stood out as her favorite. It was her first time engaging in such a unique challenge, which not only brought excitement but also the chance to forge lasting connections with talented young scholars worldwide.
Beyond Yale University, Mai An and her peers visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York during the annual haute couture Met Gala. In stark contrast to the dazzling modernity of New York City, Mai An found herself captivated by the museum’s timeless charm and enigmatic aura. “I marveled at countless masterpieces, including Claude Monet’s Impression, Sunrise, and many other iconic works,” she recalled with admiration in her eyes.
More Than Just a Competition
Quoc Viet offered an intriguing perspective on the World Scholar’s Cup: “It’s not just an academic competition. Activities like the Scholar’s Scavenge, the Scholar’s Ball, and the Scholar’s Fair created countless joyful and memorable moments for me.”
Viet emphasized how the harmonious blend of intellectual rigor and camaraderie defines the competition’s unique appeal. “This is a truly global event where scholars don’t just compete but also create unforgettable memories,” he added.
Temperature Shocks and First-Time Experiences
For Quoc Binh, the journey was full of surprises. “I’ll never forget the culture shock of experiencing the freezing cold and the unique culinary scene of this country,” he said with a laugh. Despite these challenges, Binh’s enthusiasm remained undeterred, and he expressed a strong determination to return next year: “Next time, I hope to bring home the Champion’s Cup!”
Lessons in Humility and Growth
Unlike his peers, Gia Huy was no stranger to the Scholar’s Cup finals, as this was his second time competing at Yale University. This year’s journey, however, brought new perspectives. “It helped me gain a clearer sense of my future path,” he reflected. Meeting brilliant scholars from around the globe underscored for him the importance of constant learning and self-improvement.
“I realized that excelling at school isn’t enough when you step into the vast world,” Huy shared. “Knowledge is infinite, and there are countless individuals far more exceptional than I am. That’s why we must continuously strive to push beyond our limits.”
Huy also found inspiration in the stories of young scholars with disabilities who participated in the event. “They showed me that no matter how tough life gets, determination and effort can lead to extraordinary achievements,” he said with admiration.
Reflecting on their proud journey at Yale University, the SNA Marianapolis students are not only eager to embrace the future but also determined to carry forward their aspirations and knowledge to conquer new heights and achieve their dreams.
